Tree Spirit Carving

18 August

Course Cost: To be confirmed…

Venue: The GreenWood Centre, Coalbrookdale, TF8 7DR

The carving of tree spirits into round wood comes from the “Vaettir” or supernatural being from Old Norse.

I saw some lovely examples in Norway, and have been inspired to carve them myself since seeing them. Of course this type of carving comes into many cultures around the world.

I have found that using the knife skills of spoon carving and some fresh cut wood the tree spirits naturally come out of the wood. I have evolved a process of knife cuts which release the spirit from the wood, and have successfully taught a number of groups in workshop sessions. It’s ideal for a group setting around the fire circle, each equipped with sloyd knife and a piece of green wood

This course is taught by Maurice Clother. Tools and equipment will be provided.
