Hornshurst Forest Garden, Rotherfield, East Sussex
A one-acre garden within a woodland run on ecological principles, and utilising only natural resources to provide food. So the soil has to be changed naturally into a condition where the necessary nutrients are available for the food plants (in this case fruit trees). The soil is normally relatively nutrient poor and acidic. Neutralising the acidity, increasing the nutrients, keeping deer and rabbits under control, maintaining a source of water all year round – these are some of the problems which have had to be faced, some of which will take time to ameliorate.
Could you do it on a smaller scale in your own woodland? Quite a challenge in its own right, but come along and see how it’s being tackled in a wood outside Rotherfield in East Sussex.
