Our Connecting People and Nature project in Merthyr Tydfil ran for three years, finishing in December 2020. It supported local people to access green spaces, with the aim of benefiting the health of the landscape, community and individuals.
“I have got so much out of the project; it has expanded my knowledge – especially about foraging; that has become a real passion. Also, being able to help others and give something back was important to me – as it is a connection to my teaching days and gives me satisfaction. I have grown so much in my confidence, especially in woodland crafts and skills. I am now able to teach these to others within CPaN - It is just lovely to teach people and share that joy”
(CPaN Volunteer 2018-2021, now trained as an Activity Leader).
With support from the Welsh Government’s Rural Development Programme and in partnership with The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, we ran activities in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council owned sites to engage with the local communities of Bedlinog, Vaynor, Bryngoleu and Gellideg.
Over the three years, the project trained 173 volunteers in countryside management, held 40 litter picking and conservation sessions and welcomed over a thousand people to community events, amongst many other things.
