Tutors: David Reeve and Mark Ecclestone

 

An in-depth look at the production of charcoal and bio char, led by our expert tutors with ample experience. You will receive a free 3kg bag of SWA produced charcoal and resource packs to take home.

 

Spend the morning at Mark's woodland learning about traditional charcoal, and the afternoon at the Green Wood Centre focusing on biochar with David. 

 

Course schedule (approx):

 

10am - viewing of the biochar retort being fired on a fresh load of timber.

 

10.30am - head to The Hem with Mark for an explanation of the traditional coppice practice for charcoal making and a chance to try coppicing for yourself.

 

11.30 am - see a fresh kiln unloading, see another fired and practice stacking a third.

 

12.30pm - return to Green Wood Centre. 

 

1.30pm  - Presentation: Introduction to biochar and its production.

 

2.30pm -  head back to the biochar retort to see it in full flight, pyrolysis occurring at around 460-500 degrees.
