Learn the ancient and resurgent woodland management technique of coppicing – cutting & processing small diameter trees with simple hand tools to let the light back into a given area of the wood and creating a range of useful sticks along the way. Coppicing can enrich biodiversity in your woodland, and it’s a relatively safe, simple, social and accessible ‘entry point’ into almost any woodland setting/
Day 1: Green Wood Centre, Coalbrookdale
Spend the morning in our beautiful Woodland Hall learning the basic theory and principles of coppicing – history & traditions, tools & techniques, health & safety, planning & preparation – before heading out into our hillside woodland to see healthy hazel coppice in action and have a go yourself.
Day 2: Edge Wood, Westhope, Craven Arms
We will spend Day 2 in our partnership woodland in Westhope, Craven Arms, learning how to effectively fell and present cut material, how to deal with brash, what to do about pests, and how to process coppice wood into useful and saleable stakes, poles and rods.
You will learn:
How to mark-out the coppice into appropriate sections
Techniques for safely felling small diameter trees with hand-tools
How to best approach the coppice and lay-out the harvest ready for processing
How to select and ‘layer’ trees to ‘stock-up’ the Copse
How to manage brash, pests and disease in the woodland
