Facilities: Refreshments, tools and safety equipment will be provided. Camping is available at £10 per night with access to kitchen, toilet, shower and a heated meeting room.
This varied 3 day course will cover the foundations of how to manage woodlands in environmental, economic and socially sustainable ways. An interactive learning opportunity with discussion and hands-on activity, getting you introduced to a variety of woodlands, skills, and management methods.
Course content
The principles of woodland sustainability and resilience.
UK woodland types / categories.
The physical structure of woodlands.
The legal obligations of managing woodland (and some sources for grants) appropriate to Wales.
The impacts of pests and diseases
How to develop clear objectives for woodland management.
Methods of woodland management and the main silvicultural systems.
Methods for the selection, harvesting and extraction of timber (via practical teaching/assessment) .
Timber conversion and potential products of sustainably managed woodlands (via practical teaching/assessment)
Accreditation: Level 3 with AIM, subject to submission of a completed course workbook and field assessment.
